About Academic Advising
Academic advising is an important part of your college experience at U-Matter CC and can help you stay focused on your educational goals. Prior to the start of your first semester at U-Matter CC, you will meet with your academic advisor to create a class schedule for your first semester. Your academic advisor is a resource and a guide. You and your advisor have specific responsibilities and your advisor is concerned about your success throughout college.

- Provide you with information about campus resources and services
- Treat you with respect and maintain confidentiality
- Understand and effectively communicate the curriculum. If they don’t know the answer to a question, they will find the answer or direct you to the person who can answer your question
- Assist you with choices, such as courses to take in the upcoming semester
- Encourage you to develop your academic and career goals
- Assist you in developing an academic plan for completing your degree
- Be accessible during office hours, by appointment, and via telephone and e-mail
As a student, you are expected to:
- Make contact with your advisor each semester. (While you are only required to meet with your advisor before registering for courses your first semester, you are strongly encouraged to meet each semester to form a relationship with your advisor.)
- Come to each appointment with questions or materials you want to discuss
- Be proactive in the advising experience and be willing to learn.
- Ask questions if you do not understand something.
- Become knowledgeable about your programs, degree requirements, policies and procedures
- Provide your advisor with accurate and honest information regarding your interests and abilities
- Accept responsibility for your decisions and actions that affect your educational progress and goals
Preparing for Your Advising Appointment
Students who are prepared for advising appointments are much more likely to perform well academically. There are several things you can do to prepare for your advising appointment that will make the appointment more effective for you. Look at the schedule of classes you want to take next semester. Make a note of the requirements you still need. Think about your career goals. What classes would best fit these future goals? Jot down a list of questions to ask your advisor.
