Integrative Learning Requirement for FYS
We want students to engage in campus life beyond the classroom and understand the role that experiences beyond the classroom play in contributing to their overall learning. As part of their FYS, all students are required to participate in at least one learning opportunity beyond the classroom. These beyond the room classroom opportunities may include, but are not limited to:
* campus cultural events
* community service
* campus clubs and organizations
* campus lecture
* diversity events
* leadership program or workshop
* informational interview with a staff member or faculty member

Assessment of FYS
We believe that gathering evidence is the best way to assess the effectiveness of the FYS. We utilize both quantitative and qualitative assessment strategies. Quantitative assessments include student course evaluations, surveys, and institutional dates on persistence to second semester and second year and graduation rates. Qualitative assessment strategies include focus groups and interviews with faculty, staff, peer leaders, and students. The FYS committee, comprised of faculty from a variety of disciplines, student affairs staff, and peer leaders/mentors compile and review the data on a regular basis.
